This gasket is primarily used for sealing aircraft doors and windows. Positioned between a window and the fuselage, its hollow shape allows it to accommodate significant variations in compression resulting from manufacturing tolerances of the contacting parts, assembly tolerances, deformations under cabin pressure, or deformations caused by various flight conditions. Because it is hollow, it generates only minimal compressive stress.
Since the spaces available for installing a gasket are often very small, this gasket features a shortened mounting tab that allows it to be installed in tight spaces.
Finally, the attachment area features small flanges that act as pressure barriers and help ensure a perfect seal.
