The MIL-W-530 specification, later associated with commercial item description A-A-52426, covers general-purpose woven cotton webbing.
Cotton remains useful for applications requiring good knot holding, low static generation, non-melting heat behaviour and a comfortable surface in contact with the user.
Technical characteristics
Material: Cotton according to the applicable type and construction. Surface treatments: Depending on the requirement, webbing can be supplied with water-resistant, mildew-resistant or dyed finishes. Typical applications: Utility belts, pack straps, stretchers, non-critical light harnesses and restoration of legacy military equipment.
MIL-W-17337 uses nylon and is aimed at modern tactical attachment systems. MIL-W-530 uses cotton where grip, comfort or natural-fibre behaviour is preferred.
Both use cotton, but MIL-T-5661 includes narrow calibrated-break tape applications, while MIL-W-530 covers more general-purpose webbing intended for repeated use.
