MIL-T-713 plant-fiber webbing and tape

The MIL-T-713 military specification (also referred to as MIL-DTL-713) defines strict requirements for lacing cords, threads and tapes used primarily for cable lacing, wire-harness management and component fastening in demanding aerospace, defence and space environments.
Unlike conventional strapping solutions, MIL-T-713 products are designed to provide high tensile strength and resistance to mould and temperature variations (from -55°C to +162°C depending on composition).

Technical characteristics and classifications of MIL-T-713

To meet military specification requirements, MIL-T-713 lacing products are available in several fibre types and finishes:
Type P (Polyamide / Nylon): Made from high-tenacity nylon yarns, suitable where flexibility and chemical resistance are required.
Type N (Linen): Made from pure linen and treated with fungicidal microcrystalline wax, valued for knot stability.
Available finishes: Untreated or treated with synthetic or microcrystalline wax to reduce abrasion and repel moisture.
Mechanical performance is divided into several strength classes, with minimum breaking loads ranging from 32 lb (approximately 14.5 kg) to more than 70 lb (31.7 kg).

MIL-T-713 vs MIL-T-5038: what is the difference for military textile applications?

In Mil-Spec textile components, references can overlap depending on the manufacturing requirement. Understanding the complementary roles of MIL-T-713 and MIL-T-5038 is therefore important.
Practical guidance: If the application requires edging a tactical fabric, reinforcing parachute seams or making lightweight loops, MIL-T-5038 is the more appropriate specification. If the objective is to tie or secure a cable harness while minimizing added thickness and weight, MIL-T-713 is the suitable product.
