MIL-C-43701 Type I, II elastic cord

The MIL-C-43701 specification covers military elastic cord made from an elastic core protected by a braided nylon or polyester sheath. It was developed for applications requiring mechanical strength, controlled elasticity and durability in demanding environments.
This reference is also associated with the later MIL-DTL-43701 designation and is commonly used to describe military shock cord.

Construction of MIL-C-43701 elastic cord

Typical construction includes:

  • an elastic rubber or elastomer core,
  • a high-strength nylon or polyester braided sheath,
  • controlled elastic recovery,
  • resistance to abrasion and repeated extension cycles.
This construction allows the cord to maintain tension while absorbing shock and vibration.

    Type I and Type II

    Type I – General-purpose use

Type I is intended for applications requiring moderate elasticity and repeated use.
Typical applications include load retention, equipment securing and tactical systems.

Type II – Lacing and adjustable tension

Type II is intended for applications requiring greater elongation and adjustable tension.
Typical uses include military garments, protective equipment, tactical bags and closure systems.

    Applications

MIL-C-43701 elastic cord can be used in ground equipment, aerospace fastening systems, survival equipment, tactical bags, technical covers and light marine applications.
