MIL-R-1688 nylon three-strand rope

The MIL-R-1688 specification covers three-strand twisted nylon rope for military and industrial applications.
Nylon construction provides substantial elasticity, making the rope suitable for applications involving repeated dynamic loading.

Technical characteristics

Three-strand twisted construction: Provides good grip, straightforward field splicing and tolerance to rough handling.
Nylon elasticity: Helps absorb sudden tensile loads and reduce shock at anchoring points.
Handling: Traditional laid-rope construction is well suited to knots and eye splices.
Environmental durability: Nylon provides useful resistance to many oils and common operating environments.

Typical applications

  • secondary mooring,
  • light towing,
  • general rigging,
  • climbing and descent applications where required by the programme,
  • military securing and handling.

    MIL-R-1688 vs MIL-DTL-24050

Both use nylon, but MIL-R-1688 uses a traditional three-strand construction while MIL-DTL-24050 uses double braid. Double braid provides a smoother, more balanced structure; three-strand rope remains easier to splice in the field.
