The French aerospace specification AIR 9205 defines breaking-load, weaving and quality requirements for technical webbing. References AIR 9205 R401 to R488 cover webbing made from linen yarn.
The individual references define dimensions, linear mass and breaking-load requirements for different applications.
Characteristics of linen webbing
Low elongation: Linen can provide relatively low stretch under load compared with more elastic fibres. Natural-fibre heat behaviour: Like cotton, linen does not melt when exposed to heat. Grip and dimensional stability: The fibre structure provides useful friction and stable handling for selected retention applications.
Both are natural-fibre products. Cotton is generally softer and more flexible, while linen is selected where lower elongation or a firmer structure is required by the programme.
MIL-W-25361 uses polyester for synthetic low-elongation applications. AIR 9205 linen provides a natural-fibre alternative where the specification calls for linen.
Conformity
Each AIR 9205 reference defines a specific weave, dimension and breaking-load requirement. Production can be supplied with the conformity and traceability documentation required by the customer programme.
